When I was designing this bracelet, I envisioned a series of widening circles. Each circle representing the expansion of our love over time. It was inspired by the Buddhist Metta (Lovingkindness) meditation. Thich Nhat Hanh describes it beautifully as a practice of cultivating understanding, love, and compassion, first for ourselves and then for others.
The bracelet is made up of two parts: a handcrafted wooden circle and a long strip of leather. The leather wraps around the wrist in ever widening circles, providing an opportunity to pause and send love to ourselves, our family, friends, community and all life on Earth.
A few weeks ago I came across this incredible poem from Rainer Maria Rilke. I think about it every time I put on the bracelet.
I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one, but I give myself to it.
I circle around God [the universe], around the primordial tower. I have been circling for thousands of years, and I still don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song?”
